A Historic Landmark with Deep-Rooted Heritage

The Old Horn Inn is more than just a pub – it’s a part of the rich history of Spennithorne and Harmby. These two ancient villages, located on the north bank of the River Ure in Lower Wensleydale, have long been closely connected with nearby Middleham and its famous castle, once home to the future King Richard III.

Dating back to the years following the Norman Conquest, these settlements have a fascinating past. According to the Domesday Book of 1089, Spennithorne (‘Speningetorp’) had a taxpaying population of twelve villagers and six smallholders, while Harmby (‘Hernebi’ – meaning Hjarne’s farmstead in Old Danish) had twelve villagers and eight smallholders. These communities gathered for worship at the historic parish church of St Michael and All Angels, where remnants of its Norman origins still stand today.

Just a short walk downhill from this ancient church lies The Old Horn Inn, a long-standing focal point of village life. This historic pub has been a welcoming meeting place for locals and visitors alike for generations, offering a comforting retreat in a picturesque setting.
