The Humble Beginnings of Fountains Abbey
Back in 1132, 13 Benedictine monks from St Mary’s in York decided they'd had enough of the extravagant and rowdy lifestyle o' their fellow brothers. Yearnin' for a life of devotion and simplicity, they sought a fresh start and found their peace at Fountains.
Within just three years, these determined monks settled into their new lives and became part of the austere Cistercian Order. This big step forward brought about the introduction of lay brothers — hardworking lads who supported the monks by doin’ manual graft. It’s this system that helped Fountains Abbey grow into one of the richest religious houses in the country.
The Grand Vision of Studley Royal
Fast-forward to the early 18th century, when John Aislabie, a canny fella with grand ideas, inherited Studley Royal. He had the bright idea to create a breathtaking water garden that seamlessly wove the natural beauty of the landscape with man-made wonders.
Using mirror-like ponds, classical statues, follies, and the dramatic ruins of the abbey itself, Aislabie designed a garden that’s still amazin' visitors today. It's proper posh and absolutely spellbinding.
